Things to do in Stanthorpe – Outdoor activities in the Summer
Visiting Stanthorpe is a chance to experience the fresh country air, big skies, beautiful sunsets and of course our lovely weather where it is cool at night on a hot summer’s day.
National Parks
- You can’t go past a hike at our most popular National Park – Girrawean with its 12 trails ranging from a short 15 min walk to 4–5-hour long hikes. You can always cool off in the cool fresh mountain stream near the car park and day centre. There is even a pool ladder to help you get in and out. On the drive in or out you could visit Heavenly chocolate or one of the wineries. We love Pyramids Road Winery run by Warren and Sue. This is a unique winery where the owners have a hand in every part of their boutique operation. If you need breakfast, lunch or a coffee on your way to the park call in to St Jude’s Café and Cellar door at Ballandean, opposite the dinosaur. Of course, you can wine taste as well, our favourite is the Fiano, perfect for a warm summer’s day!
- Travel across the New South Wales Border to Bald Rock National Park and climb the huge granite monolith. The views back over Girrawean National Park are spectacular! Drive a little further down the road and you’ll find Boonoo Boonoo National Park another great place for a mountain fresh water swim.
Cycling
- The Granite Belt has a bicycle trail network and trails on Mount Marley

- If you prefer a guided tour then check out Granite Belt Bicycle Tours, they operate on weekends. They have recently added electric bikes to their fleet.

Walking
- A walk along Quart Pot Creek is lovely anytime of the day. Take the trail to Red Bridge to see large granite boulders and the train bridge. Great Photo opportunity. Pack a picnic and enjoy sitting under one of the beautiful trees.
- If you visit during Winter, it is lovely especially on a cold frosty morning at sunrise. Fell the frost crunch under your feet and see the mist on the water. Check the temperature at the Big Thermometer for the current temperature!!
- If you don’t feel like anything too strenuous then an afternoon at one of the many café’s or wineries enjoying some Granite belt spoils is a lovely treat. Ballandean Estate have a wine tasting room and have the most delicious platters to enjoy in their Barrell Room Lounge.
